Faceted Image Browsing

I'm trying out 1and1's free hosting deal (3 years) and have been playing with some php systems.  A deep set of queries into sourceforge later, I found 3 different .php image gallery producing systems:
I ended up installing Qdig for personal photos and it's thumbnail generation is excellent. I was hoping for something that would support a categorization of photos by date, location, and people.  What I'm really after is on the fly collections, with a html render -- maybe a dynamic sizer and copier for using in blog posts.  Categories and subsequent navigation are one aspect.

The epitomy of faceted navigtion is provided in images, in the Flamenco project. A more enterprise example may be seen at Tower records:

Alas, they blow it on the genre browser:

Adhoc categorization should be done on this set as well -- notably by author.  Dynamic counts should be provided to provide user control.

In related links, more screen shots from around the web at widgetopia. More from the surf*mind web collection on faceted classification, more good ui, and more php at a recent wiki system foray.
