AltaVista Switches Web Portal Into High Gear/Revamped site adds new services including image and date searchs. Probably still no match for google, but it's nice to have an image search alternative to lycos anyway. (via meekrat)

What Is The LinkBack Program? offers another aspect of longstanding hypertext dreams, bidirectional links. Interestingly, the weblog community supported by Manila is structured with enough meta-activity to support this.

An article on ZDNN Developer presents a webtrail implementation in javascript (with hints to a server side production). The implementation is such a that a trail is personally owned, which makes sense from a javascript implementation perspective but not from a utility based one, a point the article misses. In addition, there's no mention of the genesis of the idea or it's long history. They do add the pattern of filtering but miss the obvious notion of a follow along system which records travels (also constrained by the javascript implementation). Still, neat stuff and an interesting proposal for evolution of the (web) age-old link collection.

IE 5.0 for the mac and it's claimed to support DOM1, CSS1 and some CSS2 and DHTML. I'll be giving it a thorough test of advanced functionality compared to Win IE5. I don't use my mac much these days, mostly due to the idiots at Bellsouth and my busted DSL connection, but a DHTML compatible browser could make it a much more appealing development platform.
