The patent scene seems largely dominated by ways of mixing pie menus with traditional linear vertical lists. Basic implementation seems unencumbered, and source is available for activeX and java.. Time to execute a selection for this type menu is much less than a traditional dropdown, as detailed here.
I've been playing with a lot of "dwell senstive" effects lately (eg. things happen on mouseover) but the cascading pie menu scenario is interesting because it really hinges on a mouseout... you strike through the menu of interest, seen in this animation.
