Interesting work from the GUIR gang at Berkeley: the idea is to augment links with identifying keywords so that in the case of a 404, the keywords can be searched -- robust hyperlinks.

An interesting idea from cruising up 101 last night for an intelligent highway implementation. Imagine the periodic reflectors have some smarts and lowtech RF transmitters for communicating up and down the highway and across lanes. Cars could communicate with the beacons, getting information about simultaenous merges (a1 to a2, a3 to a2), broadcasts from up the road about traffic conditions, distress messages, etc. There is a potential privacy issue where the beacons could communicate to enforcement agents about speeding vehicles but lots of benefits there too. The most interesting part of the idea to me is the unique multi-directional, multi-agent communication (packet) system. Messages streaming up with beacons would be the most likely for receival by emergency/enforcement operators while messages backwards could inform drivers about upcoming conditions. Interlane communication could improve safety in lane changing.

The CHI presentation from the Flamenco project that I coded is up, in powerpoint html . Probably more interesting are the general Flamenco details, offering in powerpoint
html a detailed look at the use of meta data in search around the web.
